The altar-like video installation by Chilean artist Patricia Domínguez fuses myths, symbols and rituals with ideas of extraction and indigenous land rights, cultural appropriation and the destruction of nature through industrialisation. In Madre Drone, different events and personal references converge: the care of a blind bird, the forest fires in Bolivia, the whirring of police drones, and the social protests in Chile in 2019. Domínguez takes the fragments of a broken world and assembles them into a universe where drones cry while they watch, and robots dream of glowing snakes. A place of healing where viewers can live like plants in the cracks of postmodernity. The work of the artist aims to exorcise the effects of late capitalism and ecological destruction in the physical and social body, while exploring the emancipatory potential of the artistic imagination as a form of psychic emancipation and a way of healing our colonial trauma.
