Petrochemical Legacies of Possession and Haunting

Fossil fuels have infiltrated almost every aspect of our daily lives, most intimately through plastic. In this sense, we can think of the contemporary conditions of living as being possessed by plastic. Due to plastic’s ubiquity, it will become the inheritance of untold generations in the future. But we might also be invited to think of how plastic might possess us, as in a haunting. Taking the example of the Solastalgia series by Courtney Desiree Morris, this talk will address the relationship between plastic, photography, and environmental racism. Photography is a medium that is dependent upon petrochemicals, as it also conveys a sense of time’s passing. Davis reads the haunting potential of photography through the petrochemicals that it transmits.
