In this film I am with a flower, the flower is called Agapanthus. In South Africa, its place of origin, Agapanthus holds a major medicinal and spiritual value, for different arenas that pertain to fertility. Agapanthus was the first flower to be taken by the VOC from South Africa to the Netherlands. The flower in contemporary Europe holds a function of decoration, which, I propose, denies its function of fertility. The flower is pulled between these two functions. This pull is not ahistorical. This pull is an interval. In the pull, time is arrested, it’s a temporal hole. What’s determining this pull is colonial extraction, expropriation and trade. While being with Agapanthus I feel that it stands as a surrogate for this history.
