“What does it mean for Black people to fight for the rights of nature when we are still fighting for our basic human rights?” Imani Jacqueline Brown asks. Can black ecologies based on the acknowledgment of suffering and survival and the cultivation of resistance and reparations oppose extractive plantation ecologies? In her talk, Brown will refer to her recently written manifesto as well as to her counter-forensics practice that looks into current operations of the fossil fuel industry. The talk will be followed by a response by Sria Chatterjee, who examines the role of art in the representation of nature in relation to climate change and recurrent forms of colonialism. Chatterjee pays attention to how contemporary artistic practices can question dominant worldviews and assist in opposing the continuation of peoples’ exploitation, land dispossession and species loss.
