Against Colonialism within New Digital Regimes

with Ariana Dongus and Tiara Roxanne / moderated by Pedro Oliveira (in English)

Which are the bodies and lives mostly affected by data colonialism? Which are the strategies that can oppose not just forms of exploitation based on the possession of data, but a system of structural racism that amplifies discrimination and injustice? In this session, Ariana Dongus and Tiara Roxanne offer their perspectives. Dongus presents the history (dating back to ancient times) and recent problematic effects of biometrics for the control of populations, while also referring to the migrant workforce made hidden behind the processes of automation. Roxanne discusses the links of data colonialism to settler colonialism and collective trauma, and specifically explores forms of resistance based on the utilisation of indigenous storytelling, digitality and assertion.
